Consultation on the proposal to reduce Stramongate School’s Pupil Admissions Number (PAN)

Nov 21, 2023

The Trustees of Stramongate School are proposing to reduce the school’s Published Admissions Number (PAN) from the current 60 children to 30 children.

If approved, the new PAN would apply to admissions for the academic year commencing 1st September 2025 and subsequent years. This would mean that the Reception intake would be 30 children and over time each year group would have a maximum of 30 children. The infant class sizing rule means classes in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 can be a maximum of 30 children but in the Juniors, the 30 limit does not apply.

To help explain our thinking it is important that you understand the context. Birth rates in the area are falling. They have been for many years mirroring the national picture. Many local schools are experiencing similar falling rolls and this is predicted to continue. For many years we have not been able to support a two-form entry school that we once were. The continuing reduction in pupil numbers means that the way we organise classes is becoming harder to staff, challenging to organise the curriculum and ultimately financially unviable. Stabilising class sizes of 30 will ensure staffing, curriculum and school organisation are more effective in the longer term.
